WHICH BIN TIPS

A Nappy in the recycle bin doesn't make anyone happy!

Believe it or not, dirty nappies often end up at material recycling facilities.  They cause significant and unpleasant contamination issues and may cause good recyclable materials to be wasted in landfill.

Disposable nappies and other contaminants are mostly pulled out by hand in the initial sorting which is not pleasant for the staff.  If a nappy makes its way through to the machine sorting this can magnify the contamination problem as the nappy may break up or be shredded.

Please do not place dirty nappies in the recycle bin.

Which Bin?

Waste to landfill bin (red or blue lid) only.

Impact of disposable nappies on the environment

  • 3.75 million disposable nappies are used each day in Australia and New Zealand.(source: www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/You-and-Your-Home/Live-sustainably/Single-use-items/Nappies)
  • Takes one cup of crude oil to make each nappy.
  • Take up to 150 years to break down
  • Break down into micro-plastics that never go away.
